Our History

Literacy Services was created in 1971 in response to a need for adult services in Indian River County. Starting off with just a small group of local women who attended a training, they began to train tutors, operating mainly in churches. Through word of mouth, the organization grew and established its first Board of Directors in 1975 and received its non-profit designation and grant in 1981. Now, Literacy Services is located in all of the libraries across the county. We are a proud United Way Agency Partner and members of the Pro Literacy organization.

It is estimated that 1 in 5 adults in Indian River County struggles with completing a job application, reading a newspaper, reading to their children or helping them with schoolwork. The most important indicator of a child’s academic success is the literacy skills of the child’s caregiver. To effectively address the literacy crisis in our school systems, the literacy skills of parents must first be improved.

Our organization provides free, confidential, one-to-one or small group tutoring to local adults across the county. We now offer a range of services: Adult Basic Education, GED prep, English services, and Citizenship test prep.
